Femininity is defined as "a set of attributes, behaviors, and roles generally associated with women and girls".  A person who expresses femininity is considered feminine.  The word femme also has this definition, though it is usually used by feminine lesbians.  While someone can be feminine/femme, this does not mean they are exclusively female.

Feminine Traits

Physical traits that are considered feminine differ between cultures.  In the west, stereotypical feminine physical traits include, but are not limited to:

  • Long head hair
  • Little body hair
  • Clear/soft skin
  • Thin, slight body types
  • Wide hips
  • Wearing:
    • Makeup
    • Dresses
    • Skirts
    • High-heeled shoes

Stereotypically feminine personality traits also vary, but include:

  • Emotional sensitivity
  • Compassion
  • Patience
  • Caution
  • Shyness

These views on what femininity is are very different between cultures, and can even be considered harmful and/or offensive in some cases, so it is important to not take these as the be-all, end-all of what femininity and female genders are.
